The LOHV Event in NYC, September 7th 2011

On September 7th 2011 over 80 people attended the League of Humane Voters of New York event. The venue was the Grace and St. Paul's Church in Manhattan. We thank Pastor Hauser for his hospitality. As in years past, the Church will hold a "Blessing of the Animals" in October.

The audience consisted primarily of animal rights activists from New York City. The V-Spot, an all vegan restaurant in Park Slope, Brooklyn, delivered and served a variety of delicious finger foods and out-of-this-world cupcakes. Connie Young, LOHV’s sommelier, served the finest organic and vegan wines.

The audience was challenged, stimulated and entertained by elected officials who espouse animal protection, animal activists, and performers who are also animal activists.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer reminded the audience of the importance of several issues currently pending at the New York City Council.
He has proposed an initiative to reconstitute the AC&C--a petition endorsing that initiative can be signed at http://www.mbpo.org/paws.

New York State Senator José Serrano, a strong and consistent supporter of animal protective legislation, spoke about his continuing commitment to animal protection since his childhood. He noted that some fellow senators are becoming "aware” of animal protection and are starting to vote with him.

Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal, one of the staunchest supporters of our issues in the New York State legislature, urged the attendees to become involved in the legislative process to move animal protective issues forward legislatively.

The dynamic speakers from the Animal Rights Community were Nathan Runkle, founder of Mercy for Animals, Josephine Bellaccomo, strategic communication coach and author of "Move the Message: Your Guide to Making a Difference and Changing the World, Odette Wilkens, Esq. Of-Counsel to LOHV-NY and Executive Director of Equal Justice Alliance, and Sherry Reisch, CPA representing LOHV Manhattan. Their message for the evening was support for LOHV and the urgent necessity for the animal protective community to become involved in the political process through electioneering and lobbying.

The event concluded with a brilliant and exciting performance by songwriter and theatrical produce Gary Kupper and the Mosaic Dance Theater Company lead by long time Animal Rights Activist Teri Adell, stage name Samara.

We also thank Carol Moon for writing and singing the LOHV Fight Song. We are grateful to Rynn Berry for donating copies of his latest book: 2011 The VEGAN GUIDE to New York City. Please contact us if you would like a copy.
